standpoint

I’ve been posting my heart and soul on the internet for more than a few years now. And if I’ve learned anything at all it’s to share the good stuff and keep the garbage to yourself. Last week had about as much garbage packed into it as possible. And even so, I did have one or two good nights. But I’m not looking to have a week like that again anytime soon. ‘Nuff said.

And, no, it has nothing to do with the fact that I had to watch Madonna during the halftime show of the Super Bowl. Although that didn’t help matters at all.

In any case, I haven’t posted in a while and I’m sorry it wasn’t my best or most positive offering, but I’ll make it up to you guys sometime this week. Promise.

quotation

There are times when two people need to step apart from one another, but there is no rule that says they have to turn and fire. ↔ Robert Brault

tune

I’ve been finding lots of good music lately. This is one of those songs that’s good all around, especially the lyrics. “Coming Back To a Man” by Dawes.

A Ben Folds Five reunion? Say what? Oh, it’s all too true. Get psyched, music geeks.

→ So I don’t watch a ton of television but I am a sucker for a good cop drama and I thought Prime Suspect was a pretty solid show. But then NBC went and cancelled it. And I find that shitty.

→ How’s this for a feelgood story? “War with Iran is Inevitable” I like that (a) Iran will use “terrorist groups,” and (b) oil prices will be brought to “record highs.” What a fantastic fucking world we live in.

STANDPOINT

Oh, man, did you hear? Some GOP guy named Scott Brown won some Senatorial seat in Massachusetts yesterday. What that means is President Obama’s health care reform is in jeopardy and Republicans everywhere are experiencing something close to ecstasy. The NewsFeed on my Facebook resembles what I’m relatively sure a group IM session between Newt Gingrich, Pat Robertson and Dick Cheney would look like.

And I will be the first to ask the question, “What the fuck is wrong with you people?”

I hope that all of you who support whatever, one way or another, understand what it is you’re getting the rest us into. What kind of importance can government serve when a society of individuals, all feeling more entitled than one other, basically brings about a scenario in which its elected officials will never be provided enough time to do anything worthwhile?

I mean, Christ. We let George W. Bush do whatever the hell he wanted for eight years and, now, it looks like we’ve decided that one year of Obama is enough. When Obama got elected, I was legitimately excited. Not because I’m a staunch Democrat. Shit, I’m not a staunch anything. All I knew was the nation was in shambles and anything or anybody trying to move in a different direction was definitely a good thing. That’s basic logic. If something’s not working, there’s a good chance of literally any other alternative being a better option.

But not everyone thinks that way. We all want we want when we want it – and that means right now, please. And, due to the fact everyone feels so entitled, we’re on a straightaway path to nothing ever getting done again. Because the reasonable voices will always going get drowned out by the loudest ones. And the loudest voices will always belong to those out there who feel most wronged. Because, adversely, those of us who’re content won’t fight so hard as those of us who are not. And most of us have delineated ourselves as such that we’re on one side or another. And, instead of moving toward a society of free-thinking individuals, we’re headed directly into a big fucking mess.

And for what? Lower taxes? Health care? I’m no idiot. I know these things are important in a lot of ways. But I’m a realist and the one thing I truly know about what’s going on out there is that the more we nickel and dime about these issues, the less we’re grasping the big picture. The more we all bicker about our individual rights and squabble over who’s doing what and, more importantly, who’s getting what, the longer it’s going to take us to figure this whole mess out. And the longer it takes us to find a remedy for what ails us, all of us, we’re taking a greater a chance of having this fantastic situation we all occupy slipping away.

In the long run, one Senator getting elected somewhere doesn’t mean much of anything. Except to those of you who think it does. And, I fear your numbers have grown to uncontrollable proportions.

QUOTATION

It may be that life is only worthwhile at moments. Perhaps that is all we ought to expect. → Sherwood Anderson

TUNE

Yesterday, I announced that matt pond PA is releasing a new album, The Dark Leaves, in April. Check out the opening track “Starting.”

GALLIMAUFRY

Uh-oh. Soon, the United Kingdom might be a lot less fun. That is, if the soon to be proposed ban on drinking games and drink specials at pubs goes through. Here’s hoping that doesn’t happen. Even though it will have absolutely no effect on my life.

→ Just when I start to despise the guy, Jay Leno comes out and gives his version of what’s happening over at NBC. From his explanation, it’s hard to figure out who the bad guy(s) is. This fucking sucks.

→ Recently, at The Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, Death Cab For Cutie performed Simple Minds’ “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” during a tribute to late director John Hughes. Death Cab performed it very well, albeit in their minimalist way, but the video montage behind the band was kickass.

STANDPOINT

While I type this, NBC and Conan O’Brien are said to be close to a deal that will end the O’Brien’s stint as host of The Tonight Show after a mere seven months.

The complete failure of Jay Leno’s nightly 10pm show on NBC caused the network to move the 60-year old back to his original time slot of 11:35pm, leaving no place for O’Brien.

Everyone’s talking about it and there’s really nothing new to say on the issue but I’d like to encourage everyone who reads this blog to boycott Leno from here on out, in whatever forum the dipshit appears. It’s a heartless thing he’d doing here, not to mention meaningless.

Is NBC expecting everyone to watch Leno just because? Old people will probably go back to watching Leno because most old people, from as much as I can tell, like the kind of dopey crap he presents.

O’Brien will land on his feet. FOX is very interested in talking to him. Plus, he’s probably going to get somewhere near $40 million for his trouble. But still, NBC and Leno should be kneecapped for what’s gone on.

QUOTATION

Everything is handed to society now. Before, you had to dig for it. I like that — digging for it.Al Green

TUNE

In my head, I’ve a list of ten songs of which I will never tire. R.E.M.‘s “The Great Beyond” is one of them. Maybe number three on that list. I’m not sure.

GALLIMAUFRY

My dream of a New Orleans SaintsSan Diego Chargers Super Bowl was destroyed yesterday as the New York Jets (that’s right) beat Philip Rivers and crew in a surprising 17-14 upset. Let’s go, Saints!

→ Dear Mark McGwire, please shut the fuck up. We all know you did steroids. We all know you are now admitting it so that you can get a job in baseball. We all know that you’re a disgrace to athletes everywhere. We get it. Go away.

→ In a shocking development, MTV is actually producing a show featuring (I hope you’re sitting down) – MUSIC! Vampire Weekend did an episode of MTV Unplugged. And there wasn’t even a cameo by the cast of Jersey Shore.

03.19.09 – Thursday

Whereabouts: Philadelphia, PA

Word: zeitgeist [tsahyt-gahyst] noun the spirit of the time; general trend of thought or feeling characteristic of a particular period of time

Birthday: Wyatt  Earp (1848), William Jennings Bryan (1860), Earl Warren (1891), Richie Ashburn (1927), Sirhan Sirhan (1944), Glenn Close (1947), Harvey Weinstein (1952), Bruce Willis (1955)

Occurrence: 1987PTL Club televangelist Jim Bakker resigns due to a sex scandal, handing the reigns over to Jerry Falwell, who proceeded to lead a very esteemed career crusading against such evils as civil rights, homosexuality and Teletubbies, just to name a few.

Standpoint: The new Facebook interface is dreadful. The social networking site is claiming that it’s receiving “mixed reactions” to its new design but I haven’t found anything to suggest that anyone likes it at all. As I’m writing this on Wednesday night, the new Facebook application, “New Layout Vote on Facebook”, has the votes for at 31,825 and the votes against at 514,610. By my calculations (and math is not my strong suit), that’s a 16 to 1 ratio. Not exactly a close-call. Facebook seems to be emulating Twitter with the new design and I’m baffled as to why. Facebook dwarves Twitter in pure traffic volume so why would it change to a more Twitteresque appearance? The “News Feed” on my Homepage now gives me a staggering amount of information about my friends like their results of the “Who Sings That 80s Song?” quiz. I’m glad everyone seems to be scoring so high but do I really care? Not really. At this point, I’m wondering if/when Facebook will cave the way it did last month when it announced a new user’s terms of service only to rescind it days later. Bottom-line: If something is working perfectly fine, don’t redesign its homepage and make navigation cumbersome to the point of disinterest.

Quotation: The truth will set you free. But not until it is finished with you.David Foster Wallace

Soupçon: In the movie Game of Death, the studio changed the plot and used actual footage from Bruce Lee’s funeral after the actor died midway through filming.

Tune: William Shatner has made a name for himself in the music biz by working with the likes of Ben Folds and Brad Paisley. Check out “I Can’t Get Behind That” – a spoken word duet with Henry Rollins. (I like the puppets in the video.)

Link: Ultimate Flash Face – This is too cool. Hours of fun. Try it.

Gallimaufry: The previews for the new NBC drama “Kings” made the show seem pretty ridiculous. Somehow, I found myself watching it this past Sunday night and guess what? Pretty strong. Christoper Egan (Julian Shepherd) is a little too Ryan Phillipe and Ian McShane (King Benjamin Silas) seems to play the same guy in everything I see him in but neither of those things will keep me from watching next week… I’ve read Tucker Carlson’s article “How Jon Stewart Went Bad” a couple of times now and I do feel Carlson isn’t completely off-base about certain points like Stewart’s softball tactics with Kerry in ’04 and Obama in ’08. But, Mr. Carlson, please. If the rest of the media feel that they can’t attack him out of fear or reverence or whatever, I don’t see how the blame falls on Stewart…Check out the 2009 National Douchebag Tournament. And before the comments start coming, the answer is no, I’m not one of the contestants.
